CalVET Net (Bongo for vertical operations)

45 cm oceanographic double-ring net (Bongo-style) for vertical tows

Based on the design of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations, the CalVET Net (CalCOFI Vertical Egg Tow Net), also known as Pairovet Net, is attached to a hydrographic wire by both the mouth and the net buckets.

The double-ring construction not only avoids disturbances usually caused by the towing bridles fixed in front of the mouth opening of non-opening/ non-closing plankton nets but it allows the investigator to work with two different mesh sizes at a time. Two stainless steel rings, connected by a central axle, are equipped with two long net bags. For easy retrieval the samples are concentrated inside removable plastic net buckets with side window (covered with sieve gauze).

The CalVET Net should be operated in line with a leading weight to stretch the net bags during lowering. Use the CalVET Net in conjunction with two Mechanical Flow Meters (with back run stop) to measure the filtered water volume.

The CalVET Net is available in different diameters and mesh sizes.
